The New South Wales government decided to ban tanning beds by the end of 2014. Environment Minister Robyn Parker on Saturday announced tough new laws totally banning commercial solaria tanning units in NSW from December 31, 2014. ”Australia has the highest incidence of skin cancer in the world and this ban is long overdue,” Parker said on Saturday, World Cancer Day. ”Solaria use is associated with a range of skin cancers, including melanoma, which is the most life-threatening form of skin cancer among 15 to 39-year-olds. A study by the University of Sydney estimated the ban would prevent about 120 melanomas from developing and save about 10 lives every year.
